Prompt 198: Knight

Thanks to Amity of Dreams are my Reality for this week's post, knight. Here is her poem:

Beloved covert knight
Drifting away so sadly
You are my dear friend.
~*~*~*~
I thought that I knew you
But now I'm not sure

You used to be friendly
But not anymore

Each day we grow farther
Apart and I'm sad

We used to be best friends
The best I ever had.

At some point things changed
And our lives split apart

I wish it weren't us
I wish not this way.

~*~*~*~

Prompt 196: A Fool's Paradise

Thanks to Leo of I Rhyme Without Reason for this week's prompt, a fool's paradise.  Here is his poem.

I am lost, forgotten in the world where I stay,
invisible, though I ain’t a million miles away;
No whispers behind my back, shouts more,
feel wanted at times, though mostly ignored.
After so many stabs, you’d think I’ve learned,
no good can come here when often spurned.
By optimism consumed, I’ve built on this lie,
that all friends are forever, even after we die.
Fool’s paradise, that’s where I always reside,
I cannot escape, cannot even say I have tried.

Prompt 195: Seeking

Thanks to Harshad Mehta of Space Within for this week's prompt, seeking. Here are his image and poem.

All my
Hurts, sorrows and pains
Dissolved as your hands stroked my head,
Agitated mind slowed
Peace dawned and
Coolness felt.
Love kindled
Smile returned.

Searching
For that magic
That will turn my tears into smile,
In books and knowledge
In wealth and power
In people and relationships…..

Search
Is eternal.

If you happen to find,
Hold on, don’t let go
For your life.

Prompt 194: Hourglass

Thanks to Julie of 365 for this week's prompt, hourglass.  Here is her poem:

The grains slip by slowly at first,
a trickle, barely noticed,
but as the sand continues down
pace steadily increasing,
then moments, then days, then years
fly by -- silently diminishing.

Prompt 193: Birdie

Kaykuala of Rainbow brings us the prompt birdie. Enjoy this one, friends!
Here is his poem:

Birdie

(In Golf birdie has a special meaning. It refers to the score of
one-under, one better than par for the hole)

14 clubs, that’s the maximum  allowed
Steeped with rules and regulations than most
Timing to be on the tee-box to the dot
Not to be late for any scheduled stops

The young and old if you have the will
You can start at the cradle for the feel
Of clubs or the myriads of balls available
You can still swing at 80 if you are able

A game most fair to all irrespective of skill
A handicap system creates a level playing field
A lower handicapped can still win the match
The system supports fairness the way  it is played

It is the easiest of games so said the Pro
The ball is stationary that you must know
Just take your stance and tee-off as normal
The same all the way until you reach the 18th hole

Not the whole truth as the game is not just physical
The difficulties are related more  to a game of mental
Getting good scores of pars, birdies, eagles or a hole-in-one
Nerves of steel are needed but that ‘s where all the fun

It is a frustrating game as we all had sadly experienced
But the prize-money of sweat and tears count into millions
The new Tigers, Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng are on the rise
Lurking in the shadows though Woods can still spring a surprise

Prompt 192: Sunset

SUNSET

Your tears are for the
both of us
I know your pain well
it is mine
But it’s okay to break
let it go
My calm will help you
lift your burden
I'll help you in carrying
what you can't
My strength will serve when
yours is gone
I'll always be close by
keeping an eye
And when you're unable to
walk any longer
I'll carry you in my arms
across the sea ...
into the sunset ...

* From dictionary.com:
sapid \SAP-id\, adjective:
1. Having taste or flavor, especially having a strong pleasant flavor.
2. Agreeable to the mind; to one's liking.
Chemistry can concentrate the sapid and odorous elements of the peach and the bitter almond into a transparent fluid -- David William Cheever, "Tobacco", The Atlantic, August 1860
I've raved about the elegant and earthy lobster-and-truffle sausage, the sapid sea bass with coarse salt poached in lobster oil, and the indescribably complex and delectable ballottine of lamb stuffed with ground veal, sweet-breads and truffles. -- James Villas, "Why Taillevent thrives", Town & Country, March 1, 1998
Sapid comes from Latin sapidus, "savory," from sapere, "to taste."

Prompt 188: Language

Sandra of La Palabra Diminuta brings us this week's prompt, language, with these awesome poems:

I don´t recall a single word
but your gestures …your glance

no recuerdo palabras
sólo tus gestos...tu mirada
----------------------------------------------
that word was so soft
it remained undeciphered
thus joining us both

apenas se oyó
quedando indescifrable
nos unió a los dos
-------------------------------------

quise buscar las palabras
para contar ese cuento
pero no encontré ninguna
que tradujera el momento
se me deshace el lenguaje
como el agua entre los dedos
y solo queda el silencio
en los sonidos del viento
un enigma en esta hora
una verdad de otro tiempo,
inaudibles se quedaron
sus sonidos tan pequeños
que no sé si nacerán
para algún oído nuevo
que descifrará el mensaje
cuando lo devuelva el viento

Prompt 187: Amuse

Thanks to Mad Kane of Mad Kane's Humor Blog for this week's prompt, amuse. Here is her blog post and delightful poetic offering:

One of my favorite poetry prompt sites, One Single Impression, has asked its poet-participants to propose word prompts for upcoming editions. I suggested the word “amuse,” which will be used next week, starting September 25th. Here’s a limerick and haiku I wrote for the occasion:

Amusing Verse … I Hope
By Madeleine Begun Kane

I try to amuse when I write,
In my quest to pen verse that has bite.
But sometimes my muse
Lets me down. Yes j’accuse!
I suspect that it does it for spite.

*****

Poetry prompt sites
inspire, amuse, bring friends,
awaken muses.

Prompt 186: Betrayal

Thanks for the prompt, betrayal, from Leo from I Rhyme Without Reason. Here is his poem:

I know it was right,
for the eons to come;
but as of this moment,
it seems wearisome.
lonely amidst a crowd,
I seem to be lost;
I still keep my smile,
but at what cost?
without a dream,
can hope be reborn?
for so many times
both I have scorned
deep from my heart
a beat betrays;
a lie that I uttered
knowingly in dismay.

Thanks to Tami of Rooted for this week's prompt, notebook. Here is her poignant poem:

Notebook
you are not here-
yet you are here

my notebook knows
that even if I don't

invisible words form there
electrons jump all over
spilling into my space

"you invaded it,
and now refuse to let go"

Prompt 183: Wheat

Wheat is this week's prompt. Here's the history of the word according to Word-Origins.com:

Wheat is etymologically the ‘white’ grain. The word comes from prehistoric Germanic *khvaitjaz (source also of German weizen, Dutch weit, Swedish hvete, and Danish hvede), which was derived from a variant of the base *khwīt-, source of English white. It alludes to the ‘white’ flour produced by grinding the grain.

Thanks to Isabel of In the Silence of the Day for this week's prompt, dreams. Here is her poem:

She wonders
what fate has planned for her,
what option to take,
her indecision, born from regret,
troubles her.

Yet,
in her dreams,
where zebras fly,
 fireflies play guitar,
and cats are guardian angels,
visions of her past
walk through the portals of time
to visit her.

Prompt 178: Need

Prema of An Inner Space brings us this week's prompt, need. Here is her poem:

Needs…. Needs….
Needs….and Needs….
This….. That……..
This way…..That way…..
This much…..and That much
Oh………… Never Enough!

Tired of seeking
Gasping for breath
Gave up…
Sat down …..
For a rest pause!

The pause not only gave rest,
But also peace and a new direction.
Leading to the silence deep within
‘What was never sought for!’

Seeking stopped...!

Leo (I Rhyme Without Reason) has invited One Single Impression to the anniversary celebration of his meme, Haiku Heights, from the 23rd of July at 10:10pm to the 30th of July at 10:09pm.

There is no topic or theme for that one week. You can write one or more haiku on any theme that you wish and share with us.

So get your pencils out — you have a full week to write any haiku of your choosing!

Thank you, Leo!

Prompt 177: Phantom

Here's to Felicity of Confessions of a Philosophy Junkie for this week's prompt, phantom, and here is her poem:

Most of the time,
I'm only half a person -
With half a name,
That no one utters.
A phantom limb -
That no one misses.

Prompt 175: Crater

Crater

I've dug myself a big hole, woe is me
I've squandered all my money on the horse
Hole not for swimming rather to bury
Loser I picked is winning not. My curse
Don't wait, that crater will be filled today
I've made my peace with the Lord, He'll forgive
Death by the shovel that dug is my way
Tomorrow you'll find me not though I live
Horse has nagged once too often for my ears
I'm killing my wife of too many years

Jim of Jim’s Little Photo and Poem Place

Our apologies to Jim. Internet connections don’t seem to be working well this weekend.

Happy Tau Day! Poetry Contest Begins Today!

En Syu Ritsu (The Circle Ratio)

The First Annual Tau-Ku Challenge

Today, June 28, is Tau Day. What’s a tau? Read here or click the caption to the image above to learn more. The value of tau is twice the value of pi, or 6.28. The significance of this for One Single Impression is a poetry contest! Because my life is out of control with a new kitten (don’t get one unless you can supervise it every moment of the day and night), this will not be a one day contest. It will run until Saturday at midnight. I will announce the randomly drawn winner on Tuesday, July 5. I can’t announce it earlier because of the Fourth of July holiday that I need to photograph.

So anyhow, here are the rules of the contest:

  • The topic is your choice.
  • The format is:
    • 1st line: 6 syllables
    • 2nd line: 2 syllables
    • 3rd line: 8 syllables
  • Use the inlinkz so that I can have inlinkz choose a random winner.
  • Sorry — only one entry per person!
  • The prize will be your poem and my photography combined into a beautiful display.

And that’s it! Good luck to you all. May the Random Number gods be with you.

I thank Jim for hauling me back into reality here so that I could get the inlinkz up. Late. But it’s up Thank you, Jim! You saved me!

Prompt 174: Seven Sins

Thanks to Fiducia of Rivera's Flame and Ice for this week's prompt, seven sins.  Here is her poem:

Singing praises, Sins as deadly as is!

Blinded by curses that's forbidden,
Embraced in clutches of evil,
Whispers stalk church to chapels,
Thee all, bears a child of devil,
Speak we, do the good in need,
Dormant, it sleeps deep within,
Minds so silent, in conscience,
Damn, awakes an everlasting terror...

Crushing, destroys grace of life,
Absorbed in vain, while confession,
Six things the Lord hateth, in tears,
Seventh, His soul loathes, thy creation,
Good virtues battle the evil vices,
Temptations live to sing the tale,
Good is cornered by evil, all ends,
Savior, to wipe all wrath, there's none...

Belief in abilities, as vanity rises,
Bearer of the deadliest, as christened,
Donning a disguise, in truth, in lies,
Fatal it seems, in progress, its 'pride'...

Desire for the rest, in joy, in distress,
Content, one is not with that bestowed,
Yearns for best, urges minds to plea,
Swallows generosity, for 'envy' to be...

Limit not known, in senses deprived,
To consume more, than what one could try,
Inordinate as all sees it, so loony,
Even money seems small, in front of 'gluttony'..

Pleasures and passion, in color that bleed,
Dreadful desires, taking to a high, in spirits
Rendered to a feeling, unknown in time..
Deformed by love, 'lust' indulges minds in crime..

Manifests fury, swaying decisions, so grim,
Hate overcomes shadow of peace and pun,
Second name to wrath, linked to danger,
Once near, none can save thee, not even 'anger'...

As realms of spirituality, turns its back on life,
Hearts long for gains, worth of debris, so old,
Life gets what it wants, cribs for what it needs..
Cycle of nature wheeling on, never ends one's greed...

Avoidance of effort, laying back in comfort,
Physical actions thrown away for the strong,
When you realize, you have been good for none..
Say cool! coz' you are a recipient of 'sloth'....

NOTE: I apologize for being late with the prompts on the sidebar and with the calendar. I will catch up as soon as I can. Also: If you are having trouble with the RSS feed for OSI not coming, please e-mail me at meeyauw@gmail.com. I have heard that it isn't working right for everybody. I have gotten it so it works right for me, so I had assumed it worked for everybody. It doesn't. I need to know who is affected and then I will have more clues for fixing this. And last of all: the Followers gadget on the sidebar does not work and has not worked for a couple of weeks. I have contacted Google with all of the details long ago, and they never respond. If you hear of any fixes for this problem, please let me know at the same e-mail address. Sometimes things don't work as smoothly as they should and they all go wrong at once. Thank you . . . Andrée

Please Play by the Rules

One of our faithful participants has made us aware that some of the bloggers posting links to this site are not playing by the rules.  Instead, they are linking to poems written in response to prompts on other memes or to poems written for a different purpose at some other time.

This is a reminder that you must play by the rules at One Single Impression.  Simply:

1.  Write a poem in response to the prompt (These are listed in our sidebar, so you can begin drafting your poem at your convenience.), and link to that post here.

2.  Link your post back to OSI by stating somewhere in your post that your poem is a response to an OSI prompt.

3.  If you link here, do your best to visit other bloggers who have also linked here.  Please comment on their poem in response to the week's prompt.

We do our best to support other bloggers, memes, and competitions that share our goal of providing an environment in which creative writers who write poetry find an audience that is supportive and constructive in its feedback.

We are protective of the integrity of this site, and we will delete bloggers who spam our site with irrelevant links.

P.S.  Many participants are asking about poems that they publish for multiple memes.  These are OK so long as they poem that is linked is an authentic response to the weekly OSI prompt.
