Prompt 96: Wanderlust

Thanks to Tammie Lee of Spirit Helpers for this week's prompt, wanderlust. Her are her image and poem.

wanderlust a call from the soul

in obvious and subtle ways
our world effects natural rhythms
yearning rises
to merge with depth
opening to roam a path where energy is clear
wanderlust honors a call from the soul
a journey to sync with personal rhythms
something deep
truly vital
let the moment
the wild touch soul

Call for Prompts

It's time again to extend our list of prompts. Please send one suggestion to us in a comment on this post. We will update the schedule and post it so you can write as the spirit moves you. Also, we like to post a poem and image each Sunday with a link back to the poet who suggested the prompt. We need to have your work by the Friday before that posting date. Of course, if you finish it any time before it is schedule to run, we can prepare that post well in advance, too!

Acrostic Only

Here is a long-over due post about Acrostic Only, a wonderful poetry meme hosted by One Single Impression's longstanding friend and participant, Amias.

Amias says on the blog's homepage:

I love writing Acrostic; it is a true art form. To me, it’s the only style of poetry that one can make their own. It takes time and dedication, and a good knowledge of the English language to achieve success.

I love encouraging poets in their efforts, and always hope they would put more time and thoughts into their creations. Acrostic is a poem or series of lines in which certain letters, usually the first in each line, form a name, motto, or message when read in sequence. It’s not easy to master, but it’s not impossible.

As micro-blogging and other forms of fast and easy communication become more popular, it's nice to take the time to carefully craft words in the best works of art we can offer from week to week. It's also nice to support others in the blogosphere who value craft as much as communication.

We are grateful to Amias for her poetry as well as the encouraging, thoughtful, and often challenging comments she leaves each of us. Please visit Acrostic Only and see the good work Amias fosters.

Haiku Bones

Haiku Bones is a brand-new weekly haiku meme, with prompts changing every Sunday, created by brother and sister haiku aficionados Bruce Miller and Nancy Bea Miller The meme address is:

http://haikubones.blogspot.com/

The name Haiku Bones was coined by Bruce Miller; it comes from the idea that haiku are like flexible, respiring "bones" or structure, which support the poet's ideas. Both Haiku Bones creators believe that the haiku format (three lines, of approximately 5-7-5 syllables) is an admirable platform for this creative task.

Haiku Bones is a sort of drop-in haiku coffeehouse. We hope haiku poets will stop in to see what's on the weekly menu, visit their haiku friends, and join in if the prompt interests them. If you have any weekly prompt words you'd like to suggest, please send them in: haikubones@yahoo.com

We hope you will enjoy this new opportunity to share the pleasures of haiku!
Many thanks,
Bruce Miller

Prompt 89: Departed

Thanks to Loch Rob of A Small Look Inside for this week's prompt, departed. Here is his poem:

My Old Chair

There’s a room to the north
Where the snow comes in
The cracks invite the wind openly
As the windows relent to the winter
The panes long ago traveling into warmth
Allowing the room and elements to become as one
With paint chips curling and dropping together

A dusting knocks at the door, invited
Surrounding my ol’ comfortable chair
As a relic forgotten, in a move long lost
And into the grip of empty, cold abandonment.
Are the depths of this early chill
Already visible in the washed out image of winter?
As a harrow, through the fields I wander

Back to the house and bare room entered
From a recollection acquired in childhood
I step over the sill, cautiously walking in
And the moment is captured in a frozen image
Printed for all to see as a sacrifice from the shutter
As my warmth overcomes and recollects
This mid-October memory; back home

Prompt 88: Shift in Time

Thanks to Nathalie of Spaced Law for this week's prompt, shift in time. Here are her image and poem:

Hours after minutes after seconds
Every single blinking moment
A subtle shift
No more than a sleight of hands
From the clock
Stealing time from under our feet.

We turn around
And tomorrow isn't quite
That other day any more
Too busy becoming yesterday.

OSI Is A Top 10 Literature Blog

Sandy and I got an e-mail recently that informed us that wikio.com has ranked OSI as a Top 10 Blog in Literature at their site. We were given a badge to put on the sidebar — you can see it on the right.

This is exciting for all of us who contribute and link to One Single Impression. We are proud, as all of you are proud, to be a part of this cooperative endeavor.

Please go to Top Blogs Literature at wikio.com to see what you have all accomplished!

What is Wikio?

Wikio is an information portal with a news search engine that searches press sites and blogs. With Wikio you can very easily create pages to follow the breaking news that interests you. Our info is continuously updated! Wikio is a participative service: you can publish an article directly on the site or comment on an existing item. You can also vote for an article or a group that captures your interest in order to increase its visibility on the site. Each page offers an RSS feed that allows you to subscribe to receive the information that appears there in the reader of your choice.

I have taken some time to compile a couple of simple statistics about OSI for the past year and a half we have been in existence. We are growing! It is a slow and steady growth. You can see the data here at Google docs. There are three sheets to the spreadsheet: the participation data, the chart that graphically shows our growth and the measures of central tendency.

From March 2008 to the end of December 2008 we averaged 43 poets who participated weekly.

From January 2009 to the present we are now averaging 52 poets weekly.
That is 21% increase! I guess we are all doing a lot of stuff right.

Here is a chart demonstrating our growth —

I thank everyone of you for your participation and congratulate all of you for your award!

Andree

Prompt 85: Talisman

Thanks to Joseph Harker of Naming Constellations for this week's prompt, talisman. Here is his poem:

Odds and Ends

We are making a religion out of Small Things,
weaving significance from yarn and whiskers and wire.

These inkstains are our sacred books, telling stories
of the first kiss, of cat's eye marbles and baby teeth.

Our pockets hold cowrie shells and birthday candles,
feathers to burn like incense for a mackerel sky.

We are finding the religion in Small Things,
the luck in a penny from the year you were born,

the mystery in a drop of mercury sitting sly on the table,
the sanctity of a dandelion, untouched and unblown.

Our amulets are rhinestones and peach pits.
Our reliquaries are hollows in the trees that gather water.

We are trading old religion for Small Things,
for they are everywhere and just as important, too.

They hold us together like a chain of paperclips,
and our prayers have dwindled into punctuation.

Thank us for the beauty in tea leaves and eyelids;
bury us in graves that have been measured in inches.

Prompt 84: Descent

Thanks to Sue of Sunflower Roots for this week's prompt, descent. Here are her beautiful poem and photo.

Autumn=Fall=Descent

angle of sun

creeps slowly towards

the horizon,

afternoons shorten,

shadows lengthen

cross lawns,

first one leaf

then another

flutter gently,

spiraling earthward,

evening chill

comes early,

as earth

prepares

its descent

to winter.

Prompt 82: Fog

Thanks to Sweetest in the Gale for this week's prompt, fog. Thanks, also, for the narrative, poem, and image.

This week’s fog prompt reminded me of something hanging heavily in my heart every September. Cold weather will be here soon, and along with that, the inevitable winter blues that I struggle with every year. Fall is always bittersweet for me because I love its crisp weather and beautiful foliage. But what comes after is something I dread: the cold, bleak winter. As hard as I try, the grayness always makes its way into my spirit, enveloping me and clinging while I sag from its weight. And every year, I just hang on helplessly and wait for April. Thank God, spring always comes! It’s why spring is my favorite season of the year…I feel reborn and hopeful, just like every budding tree and flower.

The fog settles in

Seeping into low places

Filling depressions

Prompt 79: Blue

Thanks to Sweetest in the Gale for this week's prompt, blue. Here is her poem to get us started:

SCRIBBLED WINGS

When the shell of me dies
I’ll exhale my spirit
And float to the sky
Wandering in heaven
Scrawling my poems
In iridescent blues
Onto the wings of angels
While they sing in a choir

And when the angels return
To earth, my musings
Will travel with them
Coating their delicate wings
Like soul glitter
Scattering loose as they fly
Settling onto earthly things
And clinging there for life
A way for me to endure
In everlasting blues
Without having to
Say goodbye

My blues will dust
The steely surface
Of a statue in a garden
Seeping through its layers
To its secretly soft insides
Or glisten on a spider web
My tangled orb of emotions
In the dewy, indigo light
They’ll smudge the moon
With violet shadows
Hanging ripe and heavy
In a midnight sky

My reveries will linger on
In this earthly world I love
As a tinge of cobalt hues
Wherever the visiting angels
With scribbled wings fly.

Rain Pebble was the Shamanic name suggested for me. I connected with it perfectly.

Allow
A pebble in the rain,
I allow myself
To just be
Joyous,
Purposeless
And completely ecstatic

(How perfect to just allow ourselves to be.)

Prompt 76: Ocean

Thanks to Sweetest in the Gale (formerly Fledling Poet) for this week's prompt, ocean, and for the poem and image below that get us started this week.
Photobucket

MERMAID

There lies an ocean inside my chest
A cosmic rolling of the tides
Each swell of breath a rhythmic crest
And in this place a mermaid presides
She skims atop my wrecks and treasures
Where gold coins wink and beckon
And grains of wisdom nestle
In oystered pearls that glisten
Where heartaches fuse to coral
Stinging plankton with their grief
While wild waves curl with churning thoughts
Then lap on shimmering sands to sleep
And the stars beam down
At the commotion, and seagulls
Hover with salt-kissed wings
Swooping with a listening ear
To hear her raw notes as she sings
She’s tossed, and rocked, and cradled
And tumbled endlessly
My precarious, sensitive mermaid
In the depths of my vast blue sea.

Christine of Quiet Paths brings us this week's prompt, windows. Thanks Christine, for the prompt, the poem by Mary Oliver, and the wonderful photograph. (Please visit her blog for a larger image of this magificent photo.)

Sleeping In The Forest
by Mary Oliver

I thought the earth remembered me,
she took me back so tenderly,
arranging her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.
All night I heard the small kingdoms
breathing around me, the insects,
and the birds who do their work in the darkness.
All night I rose and fell, as if in water,
grappling with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

Comment Moderation

Good morning!

I am writing to tell you that I have turned on comment moderation but only for comments that are 8+ days older than the post. We have been spammed lately . . . and all the junk has been on comments that are way older than one week. This has happened on my own blogs and I found that turning on comment moderation for older posts has stopped it.

This should not be too inconvenient for us. Of course, I will approve any valid comment (it is so easy to tell the difference!) and I receive notification instantly.

I hope you are all having a wonderful summer day without rain or troubles.

Love, A

Prompt 73: Inner Voice

Christine of Quiet Paths shares this section of the Pablo Neruda poem "Ode to a Waterfall" to acccompany this week's prompt, inner voice. Thanks, Christine! And thanks for the beautiful photo above.

What I have given you,
will never be a burden,
because
what I gave you
was always yours,
the flower or the wood,
the word or walls,
food of fleeting
love, resting or burning
in our hands.
But all
I gave you,
all I give you,
all I extend to you,
will contain this secret
voice
of
water.

Prompt 72: Thinking

Thanks to Jim Jim's Little Photo and Poem Place for this week's prompt, thinking. Here's his poem, and here is his photo.

Thinking

I've been thinking of times we had;
places we went, nice life we lived,
and the joys we shared. Thinking about you.

Been thinking of the home we made;
the house we found, children we have,
and the love we had. Thinking about us.

I've been thinking now that you've gone;
what did I do, where have you been?
I'm alone. Thinking about you and me.

Prompt 71: The Stranger

"The stranger" is this weeks prompt, courtesy of Beth Patterson, whose blog is Virtual Tea House. Thank you, Beth! Here is her poem:

On any graced day
The stranger shuffles, glides, stalk, trails over a horizon
Gently pushing aside the lilacs obscuring hearts’ doors
Asking only an audience.

Prompt 70: Blue Rain

Thanks to Lissa at Just Writing Words for the prompt blue rain this week. Thanks, Lissa, for the photo, too!

yesterday my mind refused to expand any thoughts
it has left me alone
to dwell inside this crumpled body
aching without reprieve
all day I hid underneath a black cloud
shifting my heels
I fell into a puddle of blue rain
and slipped into darkness
when I opened my eyes
everything has changed into one hue
when the blue sun came out
a strange amusement took over me

Prompt 69: Assimilation

Thanks to Gautami of Rooted for this week's prompt, assimilation. Here is her poem:

deathless ghosts

in that deathless night
dark images dance merrily
undead spirits come alive
ghost graves shake
assimilating the dead air
heat of that night
goes icily cold

"I shiver thousand miles away"

Prompt 66: Denouement

Thanks to Floreta of Solitary Panda for this week's prompt, denouement. Here are her poem and photograph:

Denouement
Resolution raises
Possibilities
Act II strings
Warm malaise
Questioning unknowns

Mr. Linky appears to work right now. However, you may not see Mr. Linky on past posts. This is because I have to re-code each individual post. I have now re-coded Prompts 59 (April 11, 2009) to 83 (Sept. 28, 2009). I will be re-coding all old posts as quickly as I can.
Because of the Mr. Linky problems, you may find this blog (and all Mr. Linky blogs) is loading slowly. This seems to be because it has to load individual Mr. Linkys for each post instead of using the script calls from the template. This problem may continue forever. But at least we have Mr. Linky now.
Thank you.

Prompt 64: Tolerance

Thanks to Gina of Kilauea Poetry for this week's prompt, tolerance. Thanks to her also for the photo above and the poem below.

"Against Such Things"...

Virtue n.) Specifically, moral excellence; integrity of character; purity of soul; performance of duty...

T olerance..from the top of the sea saw I hear you call- your hair in mid air looking down on me-

O h tolerance, I say squinting.. is no virtue at all.. just patience, watered down ya see..

L evel..isn't as lovely sounding- but, it's not a one way street..good for me.. oh but not for you-

E asy now, while I'm hopping..my knees are bent- but I'll be hoping.. you'll be hearing me too &

R emember, don't ya run out in the street...and well

A lign..just happens to come to mind.. cause all my thoughts get crossed-

N ow a plumb line's best for tracking, as the wind could blow anywhere

C ause we..we won't have a foundation..like the board that goes under me & you?

E asier if it's a two way street..and remember, don't ya take candy from strangers-

But the fruit of the Spirit is-
love,
joy,
peace,
patience,
kindness,
goodness,
faithfulness,
gentleness,
self-control; against such things there is no law -Ga 5: 22
