Prompt 105: Running

Thanks to Jim of Jim's Little Photo and Poem Place for this week's prompt, running. his daughter Susie of Susie Chan's Music is pinch hitting for him this week because obligations kept him from his poetic muse. Here's Susie's poem:

Run Because You Can

She spies a distant animal.
A dormant power surges.
The joys of hunting and pursual
Arise from primal urges.

“Catch it 'cause you can!”

The doggy lopes in easy strides.
He glances back behind him.
Through streets and grassy lots she plies;
What madness has befallen?

“Run home while you can!”

She’d seen them on the Internet,
The natives stalking prey.
She longed to feel their freedom, yet
The suburbs barred her way.

“Give chase if e’er you can!”

Through streets and grassy lots he ran,
This woman to escape.
What softness had her heart tramped down
For love to turn to hate?

“Find pity if you can!”

Alighting on the wild beast,
Her gentle heart awoke.
What? A frightened doggy ceased
A desert chase to evoke.

“Make friends of all you can!”

Jim says, "Her inspiration for this poem was seeing on the Internet an enactment of a savage running down (or attempting to run it down, I don't know how it ended) an antelope. Her thoughts were that, 'I can't do that, run down a wild beast.' Then in her thoughts or dreams she saw this dog running through the neighborhood and she gave chase. The poem takes up there."

The Hexapod Haiku Challenge

Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica)
North Carolina State University is hosting the Hexapod Haiku Challenge. They also "definitely accept minor departures from traditional haiku "rules" (i.e., the 5-7-5 onji composition). We'd also love to see more haiga (a haiku that is accompanied by an image) and senryu (short poem about human and/or, in this case, insect foibles) though they will be judged as haiku equivalents."

What's a hexapod?
The word Hexapoda refers to all insects and their six-legged arthropod relatives (springtails, diplurans, and proturans). We're calling this contest the Hexapod Haiku Challenge only for alliterative purposes. We would love to have haiku that feature any familiar arthropod associated with the field of entomology, including those arthropods without six legs (e.g., spiders, millipedes, centipedes, and scorpions).
NCSU judges accept entries submitted by the US Mail, e-mail and Twitter.

The deadline? Your haiku should be submitted by 11:59pm, March 20th (first day of spring!)

Go to the NCSU Insect Museum Annual Hexapod Haiku Challenge page now for all of the rules and discussion. I hope one of our OSI friends wins!

Prompt 104: Insomnia

Felicity of Confessions of a Philosophy Junkie brings us this week's prompt, insomnia. Thanks, Felicity, for this poem:

Even in the sleeplessness
of fever and delirium
and nightmares
of long dark corridors
With doors that won't open
when she is chased by monsters
and giant chameleons
who lunge at her -
She comes back;
she always comes back to you.

And she won't remember it
When she wakes up
But she's spent all her sleep
Telling you
About things
You no longer have time
To listen to.
